Child Safety

In 2009, the British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA) launched the “Make It Safe” campaign for improved safety standards for internal window blinds.  Supported by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), and Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) the BBSA have issued the following warnings and advice:

• Young children can be strangled by loops in pull cords, chains, tapes and inner cords that operate the product.  To avoid strangulation and entanglement, keep cords out of the reach of young children.  Cords may become wrapped around a child’s neck.
• Make sure all cords and chains are always secured out of reach of babies and young children.
• Do not tie cords or chains together.
• Make sure cords or chains do not twist and create a loop.
• Move beds, cots, highchairs and playpens away from window covering cords and chains.
• Move furniture away from window covering cords and chains as children love to climb.

Sadly, according to RoSPA there have been over 30 fatalities across the UK involving babies or young children becoming entangled in window blind cords or chains, since 1999.  These deaths are preventable and we would strongly recommend that the advice provided by the BBSA is complied with to ensure the safety and wellbeing of any children that may occupy or visit your home.  These guidelines are of particular significance to the 0-42 month age group.

All blinds supplied by Blinds & Shutters by David Lamb, adhere to the European EN 13120 standard (Internal blinds – performance requirements including safety) as a minimum safety requirement.

Many of our products are classed as “Safe by Design” as they eliminate the requirement for pull, chain or bead cords.  Should you select a product that comes supplied with an operating cord or chain, a safety device will be provided.  There are various types of safety device available:

• Chain-break connectors – where weight is applied to the operating chain, the connector will break apart and can be easily reconnected when required.
• Cord/chain tidy’s and tensioners – fixed to an adjacent surface, these devices keep the cord or chain taut.
• Cleat – fitted to an adjacent surface at least 1.5m from the floor, the cords should be wrapped around the cleat in a figure of eight to ensure all spare cord is held on the device.
